Sigerson holders DIT pushed hard by St Mary’s

DIT 2-11 ST MARY'S, BELFAST 1-13

Holders Dublin Institute of Technology advanced to the quarter-finals of the Sigerson cup following their hard-earned victory at Chanel College yesterday afternoon.

The hosts were handed a dream start as Conor Grimes rose above Niall Morgan to net inside four minutes and a point from Kevin O’Brien ensured a four-point lead for the holders after 10 minutes.

However, the visitors assumed control for the remainder of the half and a succession of scores from Conor Clarke, Kevin McKernan, Jerome Johnston and Aidan Maguire ensured a deserved 0-8 to 1-4 interval lead for St Mary’s.

The Belfast side received a body blow following the dismissal of Richard O'Callaghan in the 40th minute and a goal from substitute Conor Madden turned the tide in DIT's favour and despite the concession of a goal to Daniel McBride eight minutes from time, the hosts pulled through.
