MOTORSPORT: Ireland's two top rallycross drivers, Dermot Carnegie and leader Lawrence Gibson, battle it out at Mondello Park on Sunday in the final round of the Motorsport Ireland Rallycross Championship.
Gibson only has to finish in his Metro 6R4 to win the title. Carnegie powered his 800bhp Ford Focus to victory in the final round of the UK series at Croft on Saturday but failed to win the title for a fifth time, pipped at the post by English driver Pat Doran. In Sunday's British Rallycross Grand Prix, John McCluskey and Gibson were fourth and fifth, respectively.
McCluskey will be at the wheel of his Peugeot 306 at Mondello, and other quick drivers entered are Welshman Mike Manning in his Ford Escort Cosworth, Dan Donoghue in a Metro 6R4, Pearse Browne and George Tohill in a BMW Compact.
In the very competitive 2.0 litre class Christopher Evans will be challenged by Cyril McCullagh and Mick Curtis.
The opening rounds of next year's British Touring Car championship will be held in Ireland, at Mondello Park, on Easter Monday, April 21st. The Circuit of Ireland will be run from April 19th to 21st. Neil Malcolm is the new clerk of the course for the Ulster Automobile Club's premier event in 2003.
Harry Havelin has decided to step down as honorary PRO and press officer of the Motor Cycle Union of Ireland (Southern Centre). He will remain involved in the sport, assisting at various events.
