Glenanne keep top spot after seven-goal thriller

WEEKEND HOCKEY: NO SHOCKS and plenty of goals characterised the weekend in Leinster

WEEKEND HOCKEY:NO SHOCKS and plenty of goals characterised the weekend in Leinster. Pembroke hit three, YMCA netted four and Corinthians knocked six in against Railway Union in a Whitechurch rout. Having beaten Corinthians 1-0 earlier in the season the deluge was probably not expected by the visitors.

Corinthians went 3-0 up by half time with Brian Doherty grabbing two goals and Chris Pelow converting a penalty. Pelow added another goal in the second half with two more from Miles Warren and Sam Lobsey.

Further up the table Glenanne kept their foot on the pedal when they narrowly beat Monkstown 4-3 in a seven-goal thriller.

Monkstown allowed Glenanne to go 4-1 ahead in the first half, with two goals coming from Glenanne’s Stephen Butler and 16-year old Shane O’Donoghue, son of Monkstown coach Rory, also contributing. Conditions seriously deteriorated in the second half and Monkstown clawed their way back into the contest.

A goal from teenager, Stephen Cole and two from Andrew Ward put Monkstown back into the reckoning.

However, Monkstown finally ended up a goal short for Glenanne to maintain their place at the top of the league table.

At the lower end of the table, YMCA earned some valuable points at UCD’s expense, their four goals probably shifting them away from any thoughts of relegation.

Kilkenny and UCD are now well below them on the table. Jacob Webber and Rob Whelan hit two goals each for YMCA, Webber’s pair coming from drag flicks at corners.

In Ulster, the two main title challengers Cookstown and Annadale finished their meeting sharing the spoils with a goal a piece.
