Glenanne set new goals

MENS HOCKEY: It was quite a year last year for Glenanne

MENS HOCKEY: It was quite a year last year for Glenanne. Four cups spread around the club including the Neville and a Leinster Senior cup and league double and still the club feel something was let go in terms of winning a national title.

Although disappointed with not having achieved a place in Europe for this season, Glenanne return with much the same successful outfit as last year.

With coach Nasir Munir, a former Pakistani youth international, bringing his Asian influence to the side and following on from where a successful Noel Keogh left off, Glenanne have prioritised the European experience as this year's goal.

With a silver medal earned last season when they travelled, why not? The opening league match against Railway Union could transpire to be tough for Glenanne, but the Park Avenue side could also have asked for an easier beginning since promotion last season. More a baptism of fire. Can't see Glenanne buckle here.

Main competitors Pembroke (also European silver medallists) have strengthened - international Scottish midfielder Paddy Conlon arriving to the club with Simon Kershaw and Colin Kelly returning.

In tandem, Francis de Rosa takes to Australia for a year, Alan Kershaw moves to the US and Stephen Stewart takes up a position in UCD.

But Pembroke should be equally confident against Monkstown, although they managed only to tough it out and beat them 1-0 in last year's Senior Cup.

Elsewhere, Corinthians' head to head with neighbours Three Rock Rovers at Whitechurch ought to test the visitors, while Aer Lingus and YMCA appear evenly matched. Both mid-table last season, it could be a case of who first hits the ground running.
