Graeme McDowell trailed clubhouse leader Ben Crane by nine shots when play was suspended in the second round of the St Jude Classic at TPC Southwind in Memphis, Tennessee.

The Northern Ireland golfer, who was drawn on Friday with fellow former US Open champions Rory McIlroy and Webb Simpson for the first round of next week’s Major at Pinehurst, started on the 10th and birdied the 16th to turn in 34, before further birdies at one and three and a bogey at four saw him card a 68.

Crane followed up his opening 63 with a 65 to lead Sweden’s Carl Petterson and American Jason Bohn by six, though both had one and two holes to play respectively.

Pádraig Harrington parred his first two holes to remain on two under after Thursday’s 68.
