Fitzgibbon Cup/Waterford IT - 3-21; DIT 1-4: Though they fielded just five of last year's winning side, Fitzgibbon Cup holders Waterford IT proved far too strong for DIT in this opening round tie at Ballygunner yesterday.
This game was decided in the first half with Wexford star Rory Jacob contributing 2-3 to his side's 3-7 to 0-3 half-time lead. The third Waterford goal came from full forward Anthony Owens, who deflected a 65 from Jacob to the Dublin net.
An early exchange of points at the start of the second half seemed to signal a DIT revival but it never came. A succession of points without reply saw Waterford build up a huge lead before Paddy Teehan had DIT's goal just before the final whistle.
