Sigerson Cup UUJ 0-13 DCU 0-11Jordanstown provided the upset of the round yesterday when they pipped holders DCU in Dublin.
The game started at quite a pace and Jordanstown took the lead inside a minute through John Boyle. Paddy Cunningham grabbed the first of his five-point haul just moments later and the visitors were in the ascendancy.
Cunningham was in fine form. Twenty minutes in, he had already notched up a brace of points before his excellent run and lay-off set up Michael Herron to increase the Ulster side's lead.
Then a few minutes later he pounced to slot over the bar after a mix-up on the edge of the DCU square.
Despite possessing a formidable forward line, DCU struggled to control the midfield and allowed both Rory Murray and Jonathan Bradley to run at their back line from deep positions.
As defensive errors continued to litter the performance of a DCU side containing nine senior county players, the clinical finishing of Cunningham and Mark Lynch had their side leading by five points (0-10 to 0-5) at the break.
DCU started the second half with real purpose, however, but as some needle came into the game, the Dublin side were guilty of losing concentration. Although the referee stopped play on a number of occasions, it was Jordanstown who benefited from the stop-start nature of the game.
The pivotal moment came when DCU were pressing hard and substitute Cathal Craig combined with Brian Brogan to allow the latter a clean run on goal. Although he forced Jordanstown goalkeeper Mark McAlister into a fine save, the point would have been of greater use to his team, rather than the resulting '45.
Late in the game Connor Mortimer skewed a kickable free to the right of the posts, much to the disappointment of the small crowd. Despite outscoring their opponents in the second half and seeing Jordanstown's James Conlon sent off for a second yellow card, DCU squandered some precious opportunities.
