BOXING: Two Irish fighters, Darren O'Neill and Eric Donovan, won their opening bouts at the European Senior Championships in Bulgaria yesterday. Featherweight Donovan from the St Michael's Club in Athy, Co Kildare, beat Yakup Kalic from Turkey by a score of 33 to 29.

Middleweight O'Neill from the Paulstown Club in Kilkenny beat Israel's Sergey Golovanov 26-6, with the referee stopping the fight on the 20-point rule in round two.

Welterweight Roy Sheehan from Athy enters the ring today against Michele Cirillo of Italy.

Donovan's last-16 fight is on Monday against the Bulgarian Alexey Shaidoulin. O'Neill's last-16 fight is against Dimitry Serdjork of The Netherlands, on Tuesday.
