Women's FootballThe Cork minors outclassed Laois on Saturday - the final score 4-17 to 0-8 - to capture the All-Ireland title at Birr.

A goal from Rockbán's Síle Burns and points from Marie O'Neill, Geraldine O'Flynn and Amanda Murphy put Cork ahead 1-10 to 0-4 at half-time.

Further goals from player-of-the-match Marie O'Neill, Laura O'Mahony and Murphy after the break completed the rout.

Defensively Cork were superb, the half-back line supplying plenty of ball into the forwards. Juniors Ciara Walsh and Elaine O'Riordan excelled and as always Claire O'Donoghue was comfortable between the posts.

"The girls played with such great understanding and cohesion that it was a delight to watch," said Cork manager Fr Liam Kelleher. "We never lost focus and kept the momentum going throughout."

With four under-14, two under-16 and two minor All-Irelands in his CV, Kelleher, a noted athletics coach, is understandably a happy man.

"I have worked with international, Olympic and world champion athletes and I can honestly say these girls are the finest bunch I've ever come across. All of them have huge character and great respect for the game," he said.
