Golf Round-upJohn Kelly, club professional at St Margaret's, topped the regional qualifying for the British Open at County Louth yesterday.
Kelly, who recorded a four-under-par round of 68 - which included eight birdies, two bogeys and a double bogey - topped a list of 13 players at Baltray who made it through to next week's final qualifying for a place in the starting line-up at Hoylake in two weeks.
Kelly was among nearly 1,800 players at 16 courses competing for 302 places in final qualifying, which will take place on Monday and Tuesday at Conwy, Formby, Wallasey and West Lancashire.
Meanwhile, Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson return to action at the Cialis Western Open in Lemont, Illinois, today.
Masters champion Mickelson is top of this season's money list with just over $4 million and will crack the $40 million barrier by adding another title to his name on Sunday. Vijay Singh is the only player other than Woods to have reached that figure and he lines up at Cog Hill as well.
