Division Two Round-upKerry eased their way to a useful brace of points when they defeated Mayo by 15 points - 5-15 to 1-12 - at a bitingly cold Austin Stack Park, Tralee, yesterday.

Mike Conway got the goal-rush under way in the 12th minute when he drilled low past Mayo goalkeeper Thomas Duffy, and goals from John Mike Dooley (two) and Erroll Tuohy helped Kerry to a 4-8 to 0-4 interval lead.

The see-saw pattern of results between the hurlers of Carlow and Wicklow continued at Aughrim yesterday when the visitors chalked up a well-deserved 2-11 to 0-9 victory.

A few weeks earlier it was Wicklow's turn to win in the Kehoe Cup by 0-11 to 0-9, but yesterday there was no disputing the fact that Carlow were the hungrier of the two teams.

Down had to battle hard in the second half to defend a six-point interval advantage, 0-10 to 0-4, but, despite the red carding of Gareth Johnsonin the final minute, they held on for a 0-16 to 1-10 victory.

The Derry defence were caught for pace on numerous occasions and only sterling play by goalkeeper Stevenson and midfielder Convery their plight could have been worse.

Aided by two fortuitous first-half goals, Westmeath beat visitors Kildare 2-11 to 0-16. After Tom Carew had brought Kildare back into the game, it was a late Derek Gallagher point which saved the day for the home side.

Westmeath got a real boost when Diarmuid Conway found the net in the sixth minute and Daniel Carty put the midlanders firmly in control with a second goal midway through the half.
