Kerry's class shines

Kerry...2-18 Fermanagh..

Kerry...2-18 Fermanagh...0-6: Kerry crushed a young and inexperienced Fermangh side at Fitzgerald Stadium, Killarney, yesterday.

In fact only the fine weather and the scenic setting of the stadium saved the day for the 6,000 or so spectators as the game was nothing more than a training spin for the Kerry team.

Kerry, with Mike McCarthy, Aidan O'Mahony and Séamus Moynihan putting the shackles on a very lightweight Fermanagh attack, were simply in a different class to their opponents, who will struggle to stay in this division.

"A terrible setback" is how Fermanagh boss Charlie Mulgrew described the result and he admitted his side were gutted after what he described as an "awesome Kerry display".

Kerry had five points on the board after 15 minutes as they moved the ball quickly and with menace and Fermanagh were simply being over-run.

Declan Quill had two early points for Kerry before Donal Daly and Declan O'Sullivan fired over fine efforts with Moynihan and Mike Frank Russell being the catalyst for everything that was good about the Kingdom.

Paul Galvin, back in the side after injury, kicked a fine point before Fermanagh opened their account when Stephen Maguire pointed from a free.

Fermanagh's play was extremely scrappy and they had very few attacks and another free from Maguire in the 19th minute was their total return for the first half.

Kerry, in the meantime, had two further points from Quill as Kerry attacked in waves. A flurry of points including three from Ronan O'Connor and a couple of Eoin Brosnan efforts were complemented by a free from Russell as Kerry went in with a 0-13 to 0-2 advantage at the half-time break.

The second half was a formality and Kerry never looked in danger. Their first goal arrived two minutes after the restart as O'Sullivan's pass found Quill who drove the ball to the net.

Fermanagh were reduced to the odd foray into enemy territory and had points from Liam McBarron and Maguire.

Kerry were simply playing out time and could afford the luxury of taking off Moynihan.

Johnny Crowley was barely on the pitch 10 seconds when he finished a Russell cross to the net in the 50th minute. Kerry fans had something else to really cheer about when Colm Cooper came on as a substitute, his first county outing since recovering from a groin injury that has kept him out since last year's championship.
