Leona Maguire beat her twin sister Lisa to become the youngest ever winner of the Lancôme Irish Ladies Close Championship at Westport Golf Club this afternoon.
It is the first time 13-year-old Leona defeated her sister in a final after Lisa won both of their two previous meetings, the Leinster Girls and the Connacht Girls Championships.
In difficult conditions in Westport Leona went 1up with a par on the second hole, was 2up with a birdie by the fifth but lost the sixth. Leona regained the 2-hole margin on the seventh hole with a par.
However, not to be outdone, Lisa eagled the par 5 eighth hole and at the turn Leona held a slender one-hole advantage.
Lisa levelled the match at the tenth but Leona took a 3-hole lead by winning the eleventh, twelfth and thirteenth holes.
Her lead was reduced to 2 as Lisa had a par to win the 14th, the fifteenth was halved but Leona went on to win the match on the 16th hole.
The Slieve Russell twins continued their remarkable run by defeating Ashbourne's Dawn Marie Conalty 4 and 3, and Greencastle's Gemma Hegarty 3 and 2 in the semi-finals earlier this morning.
