Fermanagh 0-8 Mayo 1-7 A goal in the 20th minute from Damian Munnelly proved the difference between the sides at rain-sodden Brewster Park yesterday. The Mayo corner forward beat goalkeeper Dermot Feely to the ball and as a result of the subsequent collision, Feely was stretchered off with a knee injury.

Fermanagh were without Kieran Donnelly and in his place regular goalkeeper Ronan Gallagher started at full forward. At half-time, Mayo led by 1-2 to 0-3, Stephen Maguire scoring all Fermanagh's points.

In the second half Fermanagh showed more passion which pleased new manager Charlie Mulgrew. His switching of James Sherry to midfield midway through the half brought about three points without reply to leave them trailing by 1-6 to 0-8 with 13 minutes left. The next score was crucial and it went Mayo's way after a number of attacks in which Billy Joe Padden was involved. A free was conceded and Austin O'Malley converted. Fermanagh twice came close near the end but their forwards lacked the physique of Cian Donnelly, a flu victim.

Despite winning, Mayo manager John Maughan felt, because of the conditions, the game should not have gone ahead.
