USPGA Tour:Rocco Mediate shot a flawless eight-under-par 64 to take the early lead at the Buick Open at Warwick Hills G&CC Grand Blanc, Michigan.

Woody Austin returned an error free seven-under 65 to grab a share of second place with Brett Quigley.

Lurking two shots behind is world number three and 2003 Buick winner Jim Furyk, with Craig Kanada, Kyle Reifers and Australia's Mark Hensby all three shots off the pace on five-under 67.

Furyk, runner-up to last year's winner Tiger Woods and coming off a second-place finish at the US Open, continued his mastery of the Warwick Hills course by mixing seven birdies with a single bogey to record his 34th consecutive under-par round at the 7,127-yard layout.

EUROPRO TOUR:Michael McDermott fired a steady level par final round of 72 to claim his first win on the Europro Tour at Stoke By Nayland Gainsborough yesterday.

McDermott's five-under-par total of 211 gave him a one-shot victory over English trio Matthew Cort, Francis McGuirk and Warren Bladon.

Gary Cullen from Beaverstown finished on two-under-par after a final round of 69, with Damien Mooney on level par after a 75.

CHALLENGE TOUR:Former Ryder Cup player Peter Baker got his quest for a second consecutive Challenge Tour title off to the perfect start when he moved into a share of the lead with Welshman Stuart Manley in the Estoril Challenge de Portugal.

Last Sunday Baker claimed his first individual professional victory for 14 years when he triumphed in the Credit Suisse Challenge and an excellent opening six-under-par 65 at Quinta da Marinha gave the 39-year-old Englishman real hope of back to back title successes and the chance to regain his European Tour card at the end of the season through the Challenge Tour Rankings.

Beginning his round at the 10th hole, Baker's start was indeed impressive as he rattled in four birdies in his first six holes before adding another one at the 18th to be out in 31.

Turning for home, an increase in the strength of the wind made his second nine holes a little harder, but his only dropped shot of the day - at the fifth, where he found a plugged lie in a greenside bunker- was negated by birdies at two of the Estoril course's five par threes, the second and the seventh.

LPGA TOUR:Angela Park held a two-shot lead when play was suspended on the opening day of the LPGA US Open at Pine Needles GC, Southern Pines, North Carolina yesterday.

Park, on three-under-par 68, leads by two from a group of five on 70, including four Koreans, Amy Hung from Chinese Taipei and American Charlotte Mayorks.

Order of merit leader Lorena Ochoa is on 71.

TOUR NEWS:New father Tiger Woods will return to competitive golf at the Congressional Country Club next week.

"As host, this tournament is very special to me and I am grateful the event is receiving tremendous support from the local community, my fellow PGA Tour players and all the members and staff of the Congressional."

There was more good news yesterday for next week's $6 million tournament when world number two Phil Mickelson also confirmed his participation.

Woods and Mickelson will be joined in the field at Bethesda, Maryland by fellow countryman Jim Furyk and Adam Scott of Australia.
