GALWAY HURLING officials hope to have John McIntyre’s successor as manager in place towards the end of October and a seven-man committee has been drawn up to interview candidates. The new manager will be given a three-year term and will not be subjected to a review until he has served two seasons.

They have set a deadline of October 7th for clubs to submit candidates and they hope to have the new manager installed by their board meeting on October 24th.

Galway hurling board chairman Joe Byrne said the new manager will be handed a three-year term, which will be subject to a review after the second year.

“It is vital that the clubs discuss this thoroughly. The person must tick all the boxes; we have very clear criteria that we will follow and we are very keen for the clubs to have their say in the process,” said Byrne.

“We are hopeful to be able to make some announcement before or at our meeting on Monday, October 24th.”

This year’s All-Ireland winning Galway Under-21 manager, Anthony Cunningham, remains the favourite to land the job.

Meanwhile, the successful Under-21 football manager Alan Mulholland is expected to be unveiled as the successor to Tomás Ó Flatharta later this week after last night’s meeting with Galway football board representatives to discuss the position.

Mulholland, who led Galway to the Under-21 title against Cavan this year having also managed the Tribesmen to the 2007 minor All-Ireland, is the only candidate nominated for the position.
