Among the 54 scheduled starters for the British Open pre-qualifying at Co Louth yesterday were six Nigerians, none of whom turned up for the scheduled tee times, reports John O'Sullivan.
In the end only 46 golfers played and the Professional Golfers Association (PGA) confirmed they would be making representations to the relevant golfing authorities in Nigeria about the absence of the players.
A full report will be made to the Royal & Ancient (R&A). The only requirement for a professional golfer seeking entry to the pre-qualifying is a £100 entry fee, so theoretically anyone calling themselves a professional could apply.
Senior PGA official Pat Montgomery admitted: "Six Nigerians were scheduled to play but didn't turn up. I don't want to be drawn any further on the matter."
For the record the missing six were Remi Johnson, Yusuf Suleiman (amateur), Aminu Usman, Amos Ikponmwe, Liaidi Jayeola, Olldays Olarinde.
