It looked unlikely after 40 minutes as King's Hospital built a 20-8 lead on the basis of their hard-working forwards and the backrow of Des Merry, Brian du Toit and Patrick McMillan and prop Joe Curran, who scored four unconverted tries.
Roscrea were inspired by astute playmaker O'Connell, who ended with 15 points. Scrumhalf Robert Durcan and O'Connell added to fullback Gareth McNamee's first-half try to made a comeback possible and O'Connell's second try made it happen.
