Setanta Cup; Cork City 4 Portadown 0:Cork City were helped to out-play Portadown by a sparkling show from Roy O'Donovan at Turner's Cross last night.
It was Cork's first win at their third attempt, and the points helped them into second place in Group Two, three points behind St Patrick's Athletic.
O'Donovan scored twice, set up the fourth and had a penalty attempt saved by goalkeeper Kevin Pressman as Cork enjoyed total control in the second half.
Cork were without their main playmaker, Joe Gamble, because of suspension but in his absence newcomer Darren Murphy made an immediate impact.
Gary McCutcheon was quick and elusive at centre-forward for Portadown. His clever volley after just four minutes caught goalkeeper Michael Devine off his line, but the ball dipped on to the roof of the net.
Cork's more direct tactics paid off two minutes into the second half. A mis-hit shot from John O'Flynn flew to the feet of O'Donovan and, from the edge of the area, he beat Pressman.
Cork claimed their second after 60 minutes when Darragh Ryan's cross was headed clear to where Cillian Lordan promptly struck a half-volley to the roof of the net from 25 yards.
The third arrived in the 76th minute when Pressman mis-kicked a clearance as the ball took an awkward bounce. He turned and dived after the ball but was beaten by O'Donovan, who quickly turned it into the net.
Pressman redeemed himself in the 80th minute when he saved a penalty. O'Donovan stepped up to claim his hat-trick after Gareth McKeown was penalised for handball, but Pressman threw himself to his left to turn the penalty kick away.
On 90 minutes, O'Donovan cut in from the right before turning the ball into the path of Ray Lally, who had a simple task to score.
