Barry Murphy completed his World Championships campaign today in Barcelona with aneighth place finish in his heat of the 50 metres Freestyle. Murphy started strongly but faded over the last 10 metres to clock a time of 23.13 in the sprint event, finishing 43rd overall.
The Dubliner leaves the Championships with a new Irish Record in the 50 metres Butterfly and a 14th place finish in the 50 metres Breaststroke following his semi-final swim on Tuesday. Murphy will now travel to Eindhoven and Berlin to compete in the FINA Swimming World Cup which takes place next week.
Fiona Doyle will be the final Irish swimmer to compete at the World Championships tomorrow when she returns to the pool for the 50 metres Breaststroke heats. Doyle was fourth at the recent World University Games in Russia in the event missing out on a bronze medal by .01 of a second. She is ranked 10th going into tomorrow's heats.
At the US Open in California, UCD’s Shauna O’Brien was in action in the 100 metres Butterfly C Final. O’Brien was sixth in the Final in a time of 1:00.99 and finished 22nd overall.
Ireland's men's 200m Freestyle Relay team of Sean Leahy, Seamus Stacey, Brendan Hyland and Curtis Coulter posted a time of 7:30.45 to finish seventh overall.
