Wednesday is one of the quieter days at the Games for Irish athletes with just six in action across three sports. After Rory McIlroy came so close to winning bronze at the weekend in the men’s golf, Leona Maguire and Stephanie Meadow will be looking to bring home a medal in the women’s event.

Maguire gets going first when she tees off at 11.52pm on Tuesday night before Meadow gets underway at 2.47am.

At 7am Irish diver Tanya Watson gets underway in the heats for the 10m platform. Oliver Dingley wasn’t able to make it to the semi-finals of the men’s 3m springboard on Monday so Watson will have that in her sights on Tuesday.

At 11am it’s time for the individual showjumping final. Bertram Allen, Darragh Kenny and Cian O’Connor all put in very impressive performances in the qualifier on Tuesday with all three going clear and easing into the final. After those performances they may just fancy their chances at a medal or two on Wednesday.

What else is on?

Noah Lyles is much fancied to win gold in the men’s 200m for the United States but his semi-final performance on Tuesday leaves some doubt. Leading with 50m to go, Lyles slowed right down, seemingly confident he wasn’t going to be caught but, unfortunately for him, he was pipped, finishing in third and only qualifying in the end for the final as one of the fastest losers. It means he takes the unideal lane two for the final, setting up a fascinating final in which Andre de Grasse and Kenneth Bednarek in particular will have their eye on beating Lyles. That begins at 1.55pm.

Also on the track we’ll have the men’s 800m final (1.05pm), the women’s 3,000m steeplechase final (12pm) and the women’s 400m hurdles final (3.30am).

Medal events: 17

Artistic swimming (duet), athletics (women’s 400m hurdles, women’s 3,000m steeplechase, men’s hammer, men’s 800m, men’s 200m), boxing (men’s light-heavy), cycling (men’s team pursuit), equestrian (individual), marathon swimming (women), sailing (women’s 470, men’s 470), skateboarding (women’s park), weightlifting (men’s +109kg), wrestling (women’s freestyle 62kg, men’s Greco-Roman 67kg, men’s Greco-Roman 87kg).
