O'Connor is one of Ireland's most renowned show jumpers and Ireland's only equestrian athlete to win an Olympic medal with his bronze in London 2012, having been forced to surrender his gold from Athens 2004 after his horse Waterford Crystal tested positive for a banned substance. He rode in his first Nations Cup for Ireland at the age of 19 and has competed at the European Championships 10 times between 1997 and 2019. Based in Ireland at his own 68-acre equestrian centre, Karlswood, in Co Meath.
