UCD showed their Irish Senior Cup pedigree yet again on Saturday when they scored twice in the closing minutes to beat Railway Union 4-3 and book a place in the semi-finals of the competition.

Railway coach Una McCarthy was left to rue the contributions of UCD’s Carey twins, Niamh and Michelle, after they turned the tie on its head in those final moments, but seeing as they’re her daughters, she may forgive them in time.

Railway had produced a storming comeback having trailed 2-0 after just 22 minutes, Niamh Carey and Grace Keane scoring for UCD. By the 38th minute, though, the game was level, Sarah Hawkshaw and Kate Lloyd scoring either side of half-time, and Railway then took the lead in the third quarter through Zara Delany.

But the cup holders, aiming for their fourth success in the competition in five years, came through courtesy of those Carey goals.
