HOCKEY/All-Ireland Club final/Pembroke - 4 Glenanne - 3: Pembroke Wanderers took national honours from a local derby as the men's hockey championship final produced seven goals at Belfield yesterday.
Glenanne's record of not beating the Ballsbridge side in three attempts, despite topping the league in Leinster, was thus extended to the concluding match of the season.
Pembroke shaded the hotly- contested issue on this occasion as they claimed the only goal of the seven to come from open play on an afternoon dominated by set-piece moves.
Pembroke started in conservative mode as Gary Shaw and Stephen Butler took the game for Glenanne deep into Pembroke territory. Goalkeeper Stephen Doran made one superb save during this period to deny Brendan Parsons.
Doran's attacking colleagues failed to produce a shot on goal until the 22nd minute but it was a good one, Justin Sherriff finding the net with a drag flick.
Within seconds, they had done it again, this time feeding off the opportunism of Gordon Elliott who robbed defender David Shaw and put captain Paddy Conlon clear for the score.
A couple of minutes into the second half, Pembroke appeared to be coasting when player/coach Craig Fulton directed a shot from Sherriff past goalie Ian Clarke.
This proved to be the first of four scores in a hectic 10 minutes with Glenanne defender Paul Fitzpatrick charging upfield to win the corner that yielded his side's opener, which he converted himself.
They added a second after a great run by Butler extracted another corner, which was flicked to the target by the commanding midfielder.
Pembroke responded and goalkeeper Clarke was left stranded, by a Simon Kershaw touch on another Sherriff short corner.
Kershaw's strike proved to be decisive as Glenanne's Johnny Goulding won a 65th-minute corner that Butler made the most of to further reduce the deficit.
Tempers boiled over in the closing stages after Pembroke's Tim Lewis was injured by a mis-timed swipe of a stick. But the winners had the game's coolest performer in the form of sweet-tackling centre back Colin Kelly.
