Cricket/First Test: Anil Kumble reached 400 Test wickets yesterday - but he could not stop Australia gaining the upper hand on the opening day of the first Test in Bangalore.
Wrist-spinner Kumble bowled Simon Katich for 81 in the 79th over to reach the milestone and become only the ninth player to reach the 400 mark, having earlier taken the wickets of Damien Martyn and Darren Lehmann.
However, Australia still edged the first day's play after dominating the final session to close on 316 for five.
Having restricted Australia to 177 for four at tea, India were unable to maintain the pressure on the tourists who piled on the runs with a rash of boundaries from Katich, debutant Michael Clarke and Adam Gilchrist.
Clarke hit 11 fours on his way to an unbeaten 76 and was assisted by a rapid 35 not out from 34 balls by Gilchrist, as Australia pushed their way over the 300 mark in the final few overs of the day.
Katich was the man who frustrated India the most. Batting at number three in place of absent captain Ricky Ponting, the left-hander stood firm.
Justin Langer finally succumbed for 52 when Irfan Pathan's inswinger crashed on to the stumps via his pads.
Martyn and Lehmann were then both dismissed cheaply by Kumble. Martyn edged the ball to Aakash Chopra at forward short-leg and giving Kumble his first wicket of the innings. Lehmann edged the ball to the lone slip fielder Rahul Dravid.
The wicket of Matthew Hayden was the first of the day when he was caught by Yuvraj Singh at deep square leg off the bowling of Harbhajan Singh.
Yousuf Youhana and Shoaib Malik took the Sri Lanka bowling attack apart to lead Pakistan to an eight-wicket victory yesterday in the third match of the triangular one-day international series.
Youhana struck an unbeaten 107 while Shoaib made 86 not out as Pakistan passed Sri Lanka's total of 232 for nine to pick up their third consecutive win in the tournament they are hosting.
