Sigerson Cup Final/QUB 0-14 UUJ 0-14:The Sigerson Cup decider at The Dub, Belfast, on Saturday was a thriller to cap the Queen's University 75th anniversary celebrations as the Malone students clinched victory over local rivals UUJ.
It took extra time to separate the teams in a game well worthy of any final, the drama compounded by the what-might-have-been when Colm Cavanagh's late goal effort for Jordanstown came back off the bar.
The Moy man raced in to fist a centre from his captain Mark Lynch off the woodwork three minutes from the end of overtime as Queen's clung to a one-point lead.
It was, however, a rub of the green Queen's deserved after losing the three previous finals.
"I'm accepting this cup for the three lads who captained the three losing teams," said the winning captain, Daniel McCartan. "I know how the UUJ lads are feeling at this moment - the way we felt over the past few years."
Burren's James McGovern had earned himself a place in the lore of Queen's University as he snatched the clinching point early in the second period of extra time, having entered the white heat of battle as a substitute.
"I can't say that this win makes up for the other three defeats but I certainly will take it," mused the manager, James McCartan, twice a winner of Sigerson medals with Queen's in the early 1990s.
This was a cracking final in the Malone sunshine. UUJ, thanks to a great point by their superb half-back Rory Murray, went 0-4 to 0-1 ahead after 11 minutes. But Fermanagh's Ciarán O'Reilly hauled Queen's back and it was 0-5 to 0-4 after 16 minutes.
The man of the match, Kevin McGourty, played excellent football around midfield but at half-time UUJ led 0-8 to 0-5.
Three Queen's points levelled the argument seven minutes after the restart, and it was level again at 0-10 each and 0-11 each.
It finished normal time tied at 12 points apiece and it seemed double overtime might be necessary as the first half of extra time ended at 14 points apiece.
Then three minutes into the last period McGovern popped up on the right wing to fire over the winner, after which neither side could muster a score.
