Loren Roberts birdied four of the last seven holes to overtake Bill Glasson and snatch a one-stroke victory in the CVS Charity Classic in Sutton, Massachusetts. Roberts, 42, who entered the final round two shots behind Glasson, carded a seven-under-par 64 for an overall 18-under 266. Roberts earned £142,000 for the win, his fifth career US PGA Tour victory and first this year.
Glasson, who held a one-stroke lead after 54 holes, shot his third straight 67 for a 17-under 267.
Second-round leader Peter Jacobsen was third after a fourth-round 65 for 268.
Roberts' round included seven birdies. He sank birdie putts from one and three feet, respectively, on the fourth and fifth holes before making a 50-foot birdie putt on the par-three seventh hole.
After making the turn, Roberts sank a 12-footer for birdie on 12 and hit a two-iron within 15 feet before sinking the birdie putt on 14. He added a 12-foot birdie to take the lead on 15 and, after a three-foot par save on 16, landed an eight-iron within 10 feet before sinking another birdie putt on 17.
"The birdies on four and five got me started," said Roberts, who finished second two weeks ago at the Greater Milwaukee Open, where he claimed his last win a year ago.
"I had two key shots to the round, the 50-foot putt at seven and the two-iron at number 14. I felt I was going to play good today. I hit the ball solid warming up. I've been driving the ball well the last two weeks. This is big for me because I was finally able to put it together again."
Hale Irwin shattered the single-season Senior PGA Tour earnings record by posting his seventh victory of the year, a two-stroke triumph at the $1.3 million Boone Valley Classic.
Irwin fired his second successive seven-under-par 65 yesterday for a 54-hole total of 16-under 200.
