Wales have not yet ruled Llanelli Scarlets' flanker Dafydd Jones out of their plans for next Saturday's RBS 6 Nations opener against England at Twickenham.

Jones, who is lined up to take a place on the Wales bench, was sent off for stamping during Llanelli's Celtic League defeat against Ulster in Belfast  three days ago.

He now faces a Welsh Rugby Union disciplinary hearing, which could be convened in Cardiff tomorrow, with Llanelli officials believing he has a strong case.

Scarlets' coach Nigel Davies has questioned whether Jones should have received a red card, and Wales boss Mike Ruddock is now playing a waiting game before discovering whether he will be available for Twickenham.

"It was very harsh on Dafydd," said Davies. "Ulster tried to take our driving maul down, and when Matt McCullough dropped to the floor a few of our players went over the top of him.

"It was never a sending-off, and we will pursue it through the proper channels."

Ruddock added: "With regard to Dafydd's situation, I would rather not comment because he has a hearing, which I believe could be on Tuesday, so let's wait  and see what happens with that."

If Jones is suspended and ruled out of the England clash then his Scarlets' colleague Alix Popham would be favourite to replace him among the substitutes.

Ruddock though, has called up Newport Gwent Dragons' flanker Jamie Ringer and Cardiff Blues openside Robin Sowden-Taylor to train with the Welsh squad today.

"These guys will come in for a day or so and then we could release them back to their regions," said Ruddock. "But if we get injuries further down the track, then they are up to speed with what we've done."

Ruddock has also allayed fears surrounding Wales captain Gareth Thomas, who went to hospital in France on Saturday night for checks on his jaw after suffering a knock during Toulouse's French championship encounter against Pau.

Thomas has since linked up with the Welsh squad at their training base in the Vale of Glamorgan, and Ruddock said: "Gareth seems fine.

"We will take him off his feet today and just give him some bike work. We will rest him up for a day or so and then get him back into action."
