UCD 2 Longford Town 2:An injury-time goal by Conor Sammon grabbed UCD a point in an entertaining encounter at Belfield Park last night.
Longford Town appeared to have secured the three points until Sammon popped up two minutes into injury time at the near post to meet Ian Bermingham's cross from the left.
It was Longford, however, that had the first shot in anger, Dave Mooney firing high and wide after the ball fell kindly on the edge of the UCD area.
UCD then went close when Longford keeper Shay Kelly was at full stretch to keep out a dipping Conor Sammon shot from 20 yards.
The goal that UCD had threatened to score arrived after 25 minutes, Byrne finding himself in oceans of space on the edge of the Longford box.
With time to look up he picked his spot, smashing the ball high past the helpless Kelly.
It was no more than the home side deserved and they could have gone further in front moments later, but this time Byrne failed with a header from close range.
Longford should have equalised in the 35th minute, Dave Mooney sending a free header over Matt Gregg's crossbar.
Longford equalised nine minutes into the second half. Robbie Martin side-footing past Gregg in the students' goal.
Longford then went two up on 61 minutes, when Gregg spilled a Mooney shot and John Reilly was on hand to tap the ball into the UCD net from five yards.
Longford controlled the final passages of the game until Sammon popped up right at the death to give the students a share of the spoils.
