Celtic's Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink was sent off after scoring a last-minute goal to give the reigning Scottish Premier League champions a 2-1 victory at Inverness Caledonian Thistle yesterday.

The Dutch striker knocked home the winner from close range in stoppage time and then received his second booking of the match for his excessive celebrations.

"We know the rules, so we cannot complain about the referee on that," manager Gordon Strachan said of the red card.

Celtic are top of the table with 65 points, 19 clear of closest rivals Rangers, who were held to a scoreless draw at home to Hearts on Saturday.

Derek Riordan gave Celtic a first-half lead, rifling a close-range shot into the net on 37 minutes after Caledonian defender Roy McBain headed a Steven Pressley cross against his own bar. But Graham Bayne's header into the bottom right corner from 10 metres out in the 57th minute levelled the score for the home side.

"There was not a lot of good football from us so we are disappointed with our performance," Strachan said. "We handled the physical side in terms of not retaliating, which is good. But it was very quiet (in the dressingroom) after the game because they know they have let themselves down."
