Meadow joins the elite line-up at Mission Hills

Ireland’s Stephanie Meadow is one of nine amateurs invited to the Kraft Nabisco Championship at at Mission Hills Golf Club from April 1st-7th.

Meadow will be joined by by the world’s top-ranked amateur, Lydia Ko, winner of last week’s New Zealand Open, Georgia Hall of England, Alison Lee of Valencia, California, Doris Chen, Lindy Duncan, Camilla Hedberg, Isabelle Lendl, daughter of tennis great Ivan and Ashlan Ramsey.

“Providing the future stars of women’s golf the chance to play alongside their professional heroes in the first major championship of the year has always been a point of pride for the Kraft Nabisco Championship,” said Kraft Nabisco executive director David Blake-Thomas.

Meadow, from Jordanstown, and ranked ninth in the World Amateur Golf Rankings, is a junior at the University of Alabama. Last summer Meadow won the British Open Amateur Championship and clinched victory for Britain and Ireland at the Curtis Cup. Meadow is a two-time first-team All-American golfer as chosen by Golfweek.

Young leads clean sweep for host club Rosslare

Organiser and resident professional Johnny Young took the spoils at the most recent of the Rosslare Alliance outings which was held last Monday.

Playing off a handicap of scratch, Young fired 41 points to claim the honours in the gross category and lead a clean sweep of the prizes by members of the host club.

Liam McNamara – playing off three – was a distant seven points adrift of Young securing runners-up spot with 34 points.

Another scratch golfer, Graham Donohoe, was winner of the nett with 37 points, one point clear of the fourth Rosslare prize winner John Galvin (9).

Next outing for the Rosslare Alliance is on Monday, March 4th with places on the timesheet for interested parties available by contacting Johnny Young at the Rosslare club on 053 - 9132032.

Kiely romps home with 48 points

Incredible shooting was the order of the day at Letterkenny on Saturday as 48 points was recorded by 11 handicapper Kevin Kiely to win. With a gross score of 71 shots, Kiely’s back nine made very impressive reading with three birdies, five pars and a single blemish being a bogey on 17.

Scoring like that made it hard luck for runner-up Anthony Delap whose 44 points probably would’ve won on most other days . His round included a double bogey on the 7th and a blank on the 18th – two par 5s.

Gross winner Gerard Duffy (5) shot his best ever gross score on the Barnhill fairways with 38 gross points (two under gross 70). He had five birdies.

Loftus and Grant targeting success at Strandhill 

The Intervarsity series resumes on Friday (Feb 15) at Strandhill GC with an 18-hole strokeplay event.

NUIM’s Declan Loftus, winner of the first event in the series at Carton House last November, will be looking to retain his place at the top of the Order of Merit.

University of Ulster student Paula Grant was the women’s winner at Carton House and will be looking too for back-to-back wins.

The Intervarsity Match Play Finals and Intervarsity Championship for 2013 will be held at The Heritage this year on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, March 19th to 21st.

Australia win inaugural Ten Nations Cup

It came down to the wire, but Australia held their nerve and a spirited challenge from New Zealand to complete a historic victory at the inaugural Ten Nations Cup at Kingswood Golf Estate in George, South Africa.

Brady Watt, Lucas Herbert, Ryan Ruffles and Geoff Drakeford combined to win the international team competition with a 38-under-par total of 826, finishing just a shot clear of the Kiwis.

England took third on 31 under, Argentina finished six shots back in fourth on 839 and Scotland took fifth on 842. Ireland finished in eighth place on 861. Watt also took the individual title with rounds of 69-62-69-70 for 270. Ireland’s Chris Selfridge carded rounds of 71 71 71 73 for 286, Harry Diamond 73 75 72 69 for 287, Reeve Whitson 70 76 69 74 for 289 and Richard O’Donovan 74 78 71 and 77.

McElroy wins Portuguese Senior Open

Sheena McElroy from the Grange GC produced rounds of 78 and 76 to win the Portuguese Senior Ladies Open by three shots from Minna Kaarnalathti from Finland.

Mary Madden (Ballinasloe) and Kate Evans (Frilford Heath) both also finished in the top 10.

Kate Evans and Annie Gowing won the fourball with a 77, while McElroy and Mary Madden were beaten on the last two holes for second place with a 78. Team Ireland won the Nations Cup from England.
