A round-up of today's other soccer stories in brief...
Chelsea players off hook
The English FA yesterday confirmed there will be "no formal
disciplinary action" against any players involved in restraining a
pitch invader during Chelsea's FA Cup quarter-final replay win at
Tottenham.
The FA have studied video footage of the incident in Monday's White Hart Lane clash, where two supporters entered the field of play, one from each club, sparking a post-match fracas.
Meanwhile, Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho admits he has been left frustrated by the decision to reschedule their potential title showdown with Manchester United.
Chelsea, who are currently six points adrift of United at the top of the Premiership, were due to meet them at Stamford Bridge on April 15th, but as both teams reached the semi-finals of the FA Cup, the game will now take place on May 9th.
Mourinho said: "What can I do? I cannot lose a game to play Manchester United earlier in the season. We played a Carling Cup final and had to play one game in hand afterwards and now we have the United game, which we want to play now, later on."
Young gets call up
England had two injury concerns as they trained at
the new Wembley Stadium for the first time yesterday.
Manager Steve McClaren, whose team face Euro 2008 qualifiers against Israel and Andorra over the next week, led captain John Terry onto to the new pitch before the squad had a gentle warm-up.
Charlton full back Luke Young was yesterday called up into the 24-man squad and went straight into training along with Middlesbrough centre half Jonathan Woodgate, who had been receiving treatment for a knee problem.
Manchester City defender Micah Richards stayed at pitch side but did not join in the workout as his calf problem was assessed by England's medical team.
New deal for Sanchez
The Irish Football Association are keen for Lawrie
Sanchez to sign a new deal.
The Northern Ireland manager's contract expires at the end of the Euro 2008 qualifying campaign and he could return to club football.
However, the IFA are planning to hold talks with Sanchez following the Euro 2008 qualifier against Sweden next Wednesday.
"We must do what we can to make it as attractive as possible for Lawrie to stay," IFA chief executive Howard Wells said.
"He has done a very good job and now we have to establish what his ambitions are."
Before they meet Sweden in Belfast, Northern Ireland face Liechtenstein away on Saturday.
Sanchez's side will go second in Group F behind leaders Sweden if they win and Denmark fail to beat Spain.
Quashie ruled out
Scotland midfielder Nigel Quashie has been ruled out
of the European Championship qualifiers against Georgia and
Italy.
The West Ham player reported to the squad yesterday with an injury to his left ankle. He has now been allowed to return to his club after being assessed by team doctors.
Manager Alex McLeish, preparing for his first game in charge after replacing Walter Smith, has yet to decide whether to bring in a replacement for Quashie into his squad.
Daly does the double
Ian Daly scored twice for the Republic of Ireland
under-17 team to give them victory over Scotland yesterday in their
opening Uefa Elite stage qualifying group in Emsdetten, Germany,
yesterday.
The Manchester City striker struck his first goal after five minutes and doubled Ireland's advantage on 39 minutes. Ireland's lead was cut when Scotland made it 2-1 after 58 minutes but Sean McCaffrey's side closed out the game to secure a vital three points.
Ireland's next opponents are Greece tomorrow in Schuttorf (kick-off 3.0) before they take on Germany in the final group match, scheduled for next Monday in Nordhorn (kick-off 6.0).
REPUBLIC OF IRELAND:Thorp (Crystal Palace), Matthews (Norwich City), Nolan (Celtic), Joyce (Birmingham City), Gaughan (Liverpool), Byrne (Norwich City), O'Connor (Liverpool), McCormack (Manchester United), McCarthy (Hamilton), Collins (Liverpool), Daly (Manchester City). Subs: Duggan (Kilreen Celtic) for Collins (57 mins), Bruce (West Brom) for Matthews (66 mins), Scannell (Crystal Palace) for Daly (76 mins).
Stretford's attempt fails
Wayne Rooney's agent Paul Stretford has failed in his attempt
to prevent the English FA bringing disciplinary charges against
him.
The Court of Appeal have ruled an FA disciplinary commission does have the jurisdiction to deal with a number of charges brought against Stretford in June 2005 alleging he had breached rules regarding the circumstances in which he became Rooney's agent. Stretford's licence could be withdrawn if he is found guilty of the charges.
