Uefa Cup round-up: There were contrasting fortunes for Irish sides in Europe tonight as Drogheda United progressed in the Uefa Cup but their league rivals St Patrick's Athletic suffered a heavy defeat in the same competition.

Paul Doolin's Drogheda side were frustrated at being held 1-1 by Libertas in San Marino a fortnight ago but quickly carved open their opponents at Dalymount Park.

The Louth side were in stride throughout and won 3-0, progressing to tomorrow's second qualifying round draw 4-1 on aggregate.

Paul Keegan opened the scoring 12 minutes in.  He collected Sami Ristila's pass and let fly from 25 yards leaving goalkeeper Michele Ceccoli stranded.

Eamon Zayed then glanced a header wide from Simon Webb's superb cross while Drogheda were also denied genuine penalty claims late in the opening half.

But their pressure paid off four minutes into the second half when Keegan notched his second of the night, slotting home Zayed's ball from close range.

Stuart Byrne, no stranger to big European nights with former club Shelbourne, then ensured Drogheda's progress when heading home Shane Robinson's corner on the hour mark.

Odense 5 St Patrick's Athletic 0 (Agg: 5-0):  St Patrick's hopes of pulling off a European shock were extinguished before half-time in their Uefa Cup tussle with Danish side Odense.

John McDonnell's men were three-nil down at half-time at Fionia Park and conceded a further two goals after the restart to lose 5-0 both on the night and on aggregate.

Hans Henrik Andreasen opened the scoring after 20 minutes before hat-trick hero Kim Christensen doubled the lead nine minutes later.

St Patrick's cause wasn't helped when goalkeeper Barry Ryan and defender Dave Rogers squared up to each other after that second goal went in.

Striker Ryan Guy did his utmost to atone for the setback but his close range header 10 minutes before the break found the side netting.

To compound the visitor's misery Jonas Borring then made the task all but impossible when steering home the Danish side's third goal on the stroke of half-time.

St Patrick's, to their credit, worked ferociously after the break but still saw precious little of the ball as the home side lorded possession for the remainder.

Christensen, in fine form throughout, then capitalised on sloppy defending from Rogers and Stephen Paisley to deflate St Patrick's with his second and his side's fourth.

Peter Nymann then completed the rout three minutes from time.  He cut inside, jinked past tired defenders and drove an unstoppable left foot shot past Ryan who was rooted to the spot.
