Brian Barwick has reportedly drawn up a shortlist of five candidates to succeed Steve McClaren as England boss.
The FA chief executive is believed to have completed his consultation process and must now decide which of the candidates should be approached first, according to The Guardian.
Four of the candidates are believed to be Jose Mourinho, Fabio Capello, Marcello Lippi and Jurgen Klinsmann.
The fifth man on Barwick's list is believed to be Martin O'Neill, despite the Aston Villa manager ruling himself out of contention almost two weeks ago.
Barwick remains a firm admirer of the former Celtic boss, however, and will only discount him once he has provided a 'definitive indication of his intentions'.
Mourinho continues to be the bookies' favourite to take the job, yet there are understood to be misgivings about his candidature at Soho Square.
After handing Sven-Goran Eriksson an improved contract after he was seen in talks with Chelsea, the governing body remains suspicious that Mourinho is using the England vacancy for leverage towards landing a leading club job in Spain or Italy. PA
