Memphis Depay has been dropped by Louis van Gaal from Manchester United’s squad for the FA Cup final. It is a sign of how the forward’s stock has fallen since he signed from PSV Eindhoven for around £25m (€33m) last May.

Depay has had a hugely disappointing season but came off the bench in United’s most recent match, against Bournemouth, and started at Norwich City 10 days before that. He did not travel with the squad to London on Friday.

Cameron Borthwick-Jackson, a 19-year-old defender who played for 90 minutes against Bournemouth, is also not in the match-day 18 for Saturday’s Cup final against Crystal Palace.

Depay has been absent from the match-ay squad on only one other occasion this season, for the goalless draw at Palace in late October. He has not scored since late February, against Midtjylland, and his most recent goal in a domestic match came at Watford in November.
