Southampton defender Nathaniel Clyne is currently undergoing a medical on Merseyside ahead of his £12.5million (€18 million) move to Liverpool.

The 24-year-old England right-back has returned from holiday and is in the city to complete the final stages of his transfer.

If everything goes to plan then Clyne is likely to be announced as the club’s sixth summer signing on Wednesday, when the transfer window officially opens.

Arrangements are still being made to complete the deal for Brazil international Roberto Firmino as his participation in the Copa America ended with exit to Paraguay on Saturday.

But come July 1st the club will confirm the arrivals of Manchester City midfielder James Milner, Burnley striker Danny Ings, Bolton goalkeeper Adam Bogdan and, most likely, that of Clyne also.

Meanwhile Ian Cathro is relishing the challenge of playing his part in Steve McClaren's Newcastle revolution.

The former Valencia coach is expected to be formally announced as McClaren’s assistant at St James’ Park later this week, but has already spoken about his reasons for accepting a new challenge on Tyneside.

Cathro told BBC Sport: “It’s a forward step to a different type of football. Not stronger or weaker, different.”
