Everton have lodged an appeal with the Football Association over midfielder Tim Cahill's red card against Liverpool on Saturday. The Australia international was dismissed in the 80th minute of the 2-0 Merseyside derby defeat at Goodison Park for his lunging tackle on Xabi Alonso.

Referee Mike Riley showed Cahill a straight red card, a fact which allows the Toffees to appeal.

According to the club, a hearing will take place later this week at which they are allowed to submit written documentation. Cahill is facing a three-match ban, starting this weekend against Newcastle, if his appeal is unsuccessful.
