Transfer Rumour Mill:  Manchester United boss Alex Ferguson has reportedly stepped up his efforts to sign Tottenham striker Dimitar Berbatov.

Ferguson is thought to want to swoop for the striker in January and is prepared to offer Wes Brown and Louis Saha - plus £6million (€8m) in exchange, according to the Daily Mirror.

Manchester United failed with an initial bid for the Bulgaria international striker in the summer, however they are now hoping that Berbatov's recent unrest at White Hart Lane will make any potential move easier to negotiate.

Tottenham boss Juande Ramos, however, is thought to want Portuguese winger Nani, who moved to Old Trafford in the summer for £17million (€23.5m) from Sporting Lisbon, in exchange for the former Bayer Leverkusen striker.

However, Ferguson is not willing to let the 20-year-old leave the Premier League champions and will not include him as part of any deal for Berbatov.

Chelsea lead race for Anelka

Chelsea manager Avram Grant reportedly believes he has beaten Manchester United to the signing of Nicolas Anelka.

The Bolton striker is set to move to Stamford Bridge from Bolton for £10million (€14m) in January, according to The Sun

Manchester City were also interested in the France international, however Anelka is thought to have an agreement with Bolton where he can join a top four club in next month's transfer window.

Anelka, who signed a new four-year deal at the Reebok Stadium in the summer, previously interested Grant when the Israeli was director of football at Portsmouth.

Chelsea are currently in need of extra firepower with Didier Drogba ruled out until January with a knee injury.

McFadden going nowhere - Everton

Everton have insisted Scotland striker James McFadden will not be leaving Goodison for Celtic
during the January transfer window.

Birmingham have also been linked with a move for the 24-year-old whose crucial goals almost carried Scotland to the Euro 2008 finals.

However Everton intend to keep McFadden and chief executive Keith Wyness has pledged to turn down any approaches for the former Motherwell player.

Wyness told the Daily Express: "I haven't spoken to the manager but no approach from Celtic has come through me or the club. James McFadden is under contract to Everton and we have made it clear we don't want to sell him.

"He is a major player in our squad and will continue to play a vital role for the team. If any club made an approach in January they would be wasting their time."

If Celtic do acquire a striker next month, it could spell the end of Maciej Zurawski's hopes of breaking into the Hoops starting line-up on a regular basis.

Poland striker Zurawski has been urged by his international boss Leo Beenhakker to secure a starting place, and the Dutchman insists the 31-year-old would still feature in his Euro 2008 plans if he goes to play in America.

Beenhakker said: "What matters most is that he plays on a regular basis, the level is not really a problem."

Jewell dismisses Miller Scotland return

Derby manager Paul Jewell has dismissed reports that Kenny Miller could be set to return to Scotland.

Miller only arrived at Pride Park from Celtic at the end of August and Jewell is surprised with the speculation linking the striker with a move back across the border.

The Rams manager has admitted he will be active in the transfer market when the window opens next month but with a view to strengthening his ailing side rather than selling.

Scotland international Miller has scored twice in 11 appearances for Derby and reports have suggested he may be heading back to former club Rangers, where former Scotland manager Walter Smith is in charge.

"I have had no contact from Rangers and I'm not looking to sell Kenny Miller," Jewell told the Derby Evening Telegraph.

"As I said last week, I have not had any calls about our players apart from Steve Howard."

Howard has been receiving interest from two Championship clubs believed to be Wolves and Leicester.
