Soccer News: It has been a day of contrasting fortunes for two of the Premiership's talisman as news emerged that Anfield favourite Robbie Fowler will leave Liverpool at the end of the season while Arsene Wenger has "guaranteed" Arsenal captain Thierry Henry will not be sold this summer.
Fowler, who returned to Liverpool for a second spell in January 2006 and signed a one-year contract last May, is surplus to requirements at the 32-year-old's hometown club and manager Rafa Benitez decided not to renew the striker's contract.
Benitez, whose men face Charlton Athletic in Sunday's season-ender and AC Milan in the Champions League final on May 23rd, told the club's website (www.liverpoolfc.tv) today:
"We had a good meeting and he understood the situation," said Benitez. "He's been a good signing for us and, of course, there are still two games left so his time at Liverpool is not over yet. He will play on Sunday and it's good the fans will have a chance to see him at Anfield before he leaves us.
"I hope Robbie can score a goal in front of The Kop. That would be a good way for him to say goodbye to the supporters."
Nicknamed 'God' by his adoring fans, Fowler was a Liverpool trainee and played for them from 1992 to 2001, notably helping them lift a League Cup, FA Cup and UEFA Cup treble in that final full season before leaving for Leeds United.
The prolific striker, he has scored 183 goals for the club.
In Henry's case, recent reports have linked the France international, 29, with a move to Barcelona during the close season but Wenger has guaranteed his captain will not be sold this summer.
Following a fallow season at the Emirates Stadium, during which a Carling Cup final appearance was the closest the Gunners came to silverware, it has been suggested that Henry might look elsewhere in search of honours as he nears his 30th birthday.
The former Juventus hitman has not played since March due to stomach and groin injuries, prompting fears he may have made his last appearance in north London.
But Wenger has dismissed that suggestion and said: "It is more down to imagination than anything else, Thierry Henry will be here next year."
Asked whether he could guarantee to fans that Henry would remain at the Emirates after the current campaign, he told the club's website www.arsenal.com: "Yes, of course."
