Liverpool forward Luis Garcia is set to complete a permanent move to Atletico Madrid in the next 24 hours, according to the player's agent.

The Spanish international has been linked with a return to his former club, who are believed to be close to agreeing a separate £27million deal for striker Fernando Torres to move the other way.

"We are working on Luis Garcia's permanent transfer to Atletico de Madrid," Garcia's agent Manuel Garcia Quillon said.

"If all goes well, the deal should be completed either today or tomorrow."

Garcia arrived at Anfield in the summer of 2004 from Barcelona and played a pivotal role in the Reds winning the Champions League that season.

The 29-year-old suffered a serious knee injury this year in January which curtailed his season.  PA
