Goals were at a premium on the opening night of the new League of Ireland season as Sligo Rovers moved to the top of the table with a 2-0 win over Premier League newcomers Galway United.

Second-half strikes from Gary Curran and Jason McCartney proved decisive at Terryland Park as United got an early taste of life in the top flight.

At Dalymount Park, Bohemians and Drogheda United played out an uninspired scoreless draw, Glenn Fitzpatrick guilty of missing a gilt-edged opportunity to claim the points for Paul Doolin's side.

Last year's runners-up Derry City opened their campaign with a 1-0 win at home to Bray Wanderers while Waterford United, only drafted in to the Premier Division following Shelbourne's relegation late last month, got off to the best possible start with a 1-0 win over Cork City.

Elsewhere, UCD and Shamrock Rovers ended 0-0.
