Roy Keane marked his first match as a Premier League boss by handing a debut to Britain's most expensive goalkeeper Craig Gordon against Tottenham at the Stadium of Light.

Keane's new £9million man was joined by three other debutants in Dickson Etuhu, Paul McShane and Kieran Richardson while visiting boss Martin Jol stuck with a tried and tested formula.

Younes Kaboul was the only one of Jol's summer signings to earn a place in the starting line-up with Dimitar Berbatov and Robbie Keane preferred to £16.5million Darren Bent, who was on the bench.

Sunderland: Gordon, Whitehead, Nosworthy, McShane, Wallace, Edwards, Etuhu, Yorke, Richardson, Murphy, Stokes. Subs: Ward, Miller, Collins, Chopra, Connolly.

Tottenham: Robinson, Chimbonda, Gardner, Stalteri, Kaboul, Jenas, Zokora, Malbranque, Tainio, Berbatov, Keane. Subs: Cerny, Defoe, Huddlestone, Bent, Rocha.
