Mourinho irked again by referees

Jose Mourinho knows he will not find Steve Bennett as lenient as Graham Poll after narrowly escaping a red card against newly-crowned champions Manchester United.

The Chelsea boss mistakenly thought he had been sent to the stands by Poll during last night's goalless draw at Stamford Bridge when he criticised the referee's decision to penalise Claude Makelele for a foul on United's Wayne Rooney.

Mourinho had a heated exchange with Poll who, earlier in the season, had sent off John Terry in the Blues' defeat at Tottenham.

The Portuguese coach could have been banished from the touchline for the FA Cup final but he escaped such a sanction when fourth official Mark Clattenburg beckoned him back into the dugout.

But Mourinho made no secret of his dislike of Poll's refereeing and, although he would not say it directly, was pleased he would not be officiating at the cup final.

Mourinho said: "I thought he had sent me to the stands but no he did not. I cannot remember what it was about but with Mr Poll and Chelsea matches there are so many incidents that I cannot choose one.

"I told him a couple of things I had in my heart since the Tottenham game but nothing special. I was not sent to the stands. I would not say I am relieved he is not the cup final referee. I just say he is a referee that Chelsea has no luck with.

"If we can have another ref then we are happy. We don't like to have Mr Poll. But the decisions are from the \[refereeing] committee and we have to accept them. But if you ask me if I jump with happiness when I know Mr Poll is our referee? No."

It remains to be seen whether Mourinho is happy about the choice of Bennett as referee for the cup final in nine days' time.

While Poll let the Portuguese coach off the hook last night, Bennett had no such qualms about red carding Mourinho during the Carling Cup final in February 2005.

Mourinho's now infamous gesture of putting his finger on his lips to Liverpool fans during their 3-2 victory resulted in his dismissal from the touchline.

Chelsea's clash with United last night turned out to be a giant flop as both sides rested numerous first-team stars.
