Ireland youngster Darren O'Dea has signed a new contract with Scottish champions Celtic after impressing at home and in Europe this season.

The deal will keep the defender at the club until the end of the 2009-10 season after which the Premier League champions will have an option for a further year.

The 20-year-old made his debut against St Mirren in the Scottish Cup in September and has made 16 appearances this season, scoring three goals.

O'Dea - who has come through the Celtic youth system - made his Champions League debut came against FC Copenhagen in December when he came on as a second-half substitute for Stephen McManus.

He made his first start in the tournament against AC Milan in the San Siro last week.

O'Dea was outstanding in the second leg of their last-16 clash, although the Parkhead side went out 1-0 on aggregate after an extra-time winner from Brazilian Kaka.
