Arsenal (1) v Birmingham (16)

Philippe Senderos (knee) is available. Johan Djourou (groin) is definitely out, but captain William Gallas will return at centre-back. Goalkeeper Jens Lehmann will be on the bench, despite continued talks over a proposed move to Borussia Dortmund. Robin van Persie (flu) is sidelined, while Emmanuel Eboue, Kolo Toure and Alexandre Song are all away on international duty.

Martin Taylor wins a recall at centre-back, with Radhi Jaidi on African Nations Cup duty. Rafael Schmitz is in the squad after injury, while skipper Damien Johnson is set to wear a protective mask and play only two weeks after suffering a slight fracture of the skull. He will replace Mehdi Nafti — also away preparing for the African Nations Cup — while Olivier Kapo has recovered from a knee injury and will travel to London.

John Carew suffered no ill-effects after returning from another knee injury in the FA Cup clash with Manchester United last weekend. Patrik Berger is back in training after recovering from a hamstring injury but it is too soon for him to be considered. Isaiah Osbourne has recovered from a slight thigh problem but Martin O'Neill is willing to allow him to go out on loan with Leicester interested in signing the midfielder.

Michael Duberry (knee) faces a late fitness test but utility man Brynjar Gunnarsson is back from a ban and defender Alex Pearce stands by for his debut. Ibrahima Sonko, Andre Bikey and Emerse Fae are on African Nations Cup duty and wingers John Oster (ankle) and Glen Little (heel) are out.
