Portsmouth hope to sign Reading's Nicky Shorey and Tottenham defender Younes Kaboul before Sunday's FA Community Shield match against Manchester United at Wembley.

Portsmouth manager Harry Redknapp has also insisted that he has no intention of selling Croatian midfielder Niko Kranjcar, who has been linked with a number of clubs across Europe after an impressive season at Fratton Park.

Redknapp's assistant Tony Adams went to see England international Shorey in action at the weekend but the defender did not play, possibly because his manager is resigned to letting him leave to either Pompey or Aston Villa.

Steve Coppell expects a move in the next few days. Reading turned down a €5million bid from West Ham for Shorey last season but now Coppell has said: "To be fair to Nicky, he has made it clear from this time last year that he would prefer to leave and ply his trade elsewhere.

"But we have no need to sell anyone and I'm not going to give anyone away."

French centre-back Kaboul also remains firmly in Redknapp's sights. The Tottenham defender recently rejected a move to Sunderland is said to prefer a move to Portsmouth.

Redknapp has already spent €14million to bring England striker Peter Crouch to Fratton Park from Liverpool.

Portsmouth midfielder Sean Davis has reportedly snubbed interest from Celtic in favour of remaining in the Premier League, while Ipswich remain interested in striker David Nugent.

Nugent turned down a loan move to Ipswich last March, preferring to fight for his place at Portsmouth, who have denied the Championship club have made a £3.5million bid

After the sale of Sulley Muntari to Inter Milan for nearly €18million, however, Portsmouth do not need to let anyone else go and Redknapp is particularly adamant that Krancjar remain at the club.

"I don't want to sell him, I've no intention. This is a player who can be absolutely massive for us," Redknapp told The News. "I think Niko got fitter last season and he'll be back this year fitter again.

"I feel he can get better as well. He's a real class act. He's still only young and improving all the time.

"He can keep going on and become one of the best players in the Premier League if he keeps improving. I really, really think he can.

"He's one of our most creative players, for sure. He can do something special, he can beat someone and put a ball in. Niko has got that excellent ability."
