Republic of Ireland captain Robbie Keane is convinced his predecessor and namesake Roy has the ability to rejuvenate Sunderland after his appointment as manager on Monday.
The former Ireland and Manchester United midfielder was confirmed as boss following this week's 2-0 victory over West Brom at the Stadium of Light, despite having no previous managerial experience.
His impending appointment was clear boost to Sunderland who lost five in a row under the guidance of new chairman and interim manager Niall Quinn.
Tottenham striker Robbie believes Roy has what it takes to succeed as he said: "It's a great move for him, and I'm sure he'll do well.
"He is a strong character, and was very vocal not only in the dressing room, but in particular on the pitch in getting the lads together.
"He was known for that as a player, and I'm sure he will be the same as a manager at Sunderland," added the Ireland captain.
"He is able to command the respect of players, and that will make them want to perform for him.
"I'm sure he'll hand out a few rollickings along the way, but then that's what every manager does."
After playing alongside Keane for many years at the heart of Ireland's midfield, and weathering a few harsh words along the way, Kevin Kilbane added that there is another side to Keane.
"Everybody knows of Roy's character and the strength he has, but he also has a softer side where he will put his arm around players and speak to them," remarked Kilbane.
"To many people his appointment will come as a surprise, and I suppose it has come early, but managers who were players have to go in at some stage."
