Newcastle have signed England forward Alan Smith from Manchester United for an undisclosed fee although it is believed to be in the region of €9 million.

The 26-year-old has agreed a five-year deal with the Magpies after three years at Old Trafford.

The former Leeds player's time with the Premier League champions was affected by injury and he managed only 93 appearances, scoring 12 goals.

Smith will join his former Elland Road team-mates Mark Viduka and James Milner.
