Walter Smith laid down the gauntlet to Panathinaikos by fielding strikers Kris Boyd and Nacho Novo in an attacking line-up as Rangers sought to clinch a place in the last 16 of the Uefa Cup.

Manager Smith has often preferred to line up in a 4-5-1 formation in Europe, but following the goalless draw in the first leg at Ibrox he opted to go for two frontmen against Jose Peseiro's side at the Apostolos Nikolaidis stadium.

Gers skipper Barry Ferguson's selection in midfield for his 76th European match meant he equalled Dave Narey's appearance record for Scottish players in competitions on the continent.

Peseiro made two changes to the side which laboured in Glasgow, bringing in Portuguese striker Helder Postiga for Dame N'Doye - who dropped to the bench - while Portuguese midfielder Simao was replaced by set-piece specialist Andreas Ivanschitz.
