Angola 0 Portugal 1: Pauleta proved Portugal's hero as they overcame a stiff test against Angola in Cologne. But the Portuguese support were less than best pleased, booing their side throughout the second half as the team failed to hammer home their advantage having scored early in the game.
Classy PSG forward Pauleta - their in-form striker keen to prove he can indeed raise his game on the biggest stage - nearly scored after just 11 seconds but saw his angled drive, after superb work from Luis Figo, flash narrowly wide of the upright.
However he made no mistake four minutes later, slotting home his 47th international goal after Figo charged into the penalty area and squared the ball for a simple tap-in.
Pauleta and Simao Sabrosa both fired good chances off target as the Angolans struggled to settle - but when they did find their feet keeper Ricardo was forced to pull off a fine save to deny Antonio Mendonca.
That chance gave Angola confidence and Andre Mateus drove wide before Fabrice Akwa sent an acrobatic overhead kick over the crossbar and Andre Macanga's shot was tipped around the post.
Luiz Felipe Scolari's men were always a threat, though, and Figo's cross was headed against the woodwork by Cristiano Ronaldo, who also had a fierce strike palmed away by Angola stopper Joao Ricardo.
After the break, Portugal dominated the early action and both Pauleta and Tiago drew fine saves from Ricardo with long-range efforts.
Angola stood strong and even enjoyed a decent spell of possession midway through the half.
But they failed to trouble the Portugal keeper until Mateus' shot was well saved in the dying stages, when Maniche's long-range piledriver was tipped over the bar.
